The first-acre initiative to drive sustainability
The National Steering Committee on Disaster Response (NSCDR) remains fully cognisant that its mandate goes beyond addressing short-term interventions to cushion those Kenyans impacted by the ongoing drought, through food distribution drives and cash donations.
The Committee’s assignment involves coming up with medium- and long-term sustainable programmes that will result in more impactful outcomes. Long-term access to water through the sinking and rehabilitation of boreholes remains a key project for the Committee. As already stated, the NSCDR will be partnering with the Kenya Defence Forces to implement this.
The First Acre project is an initiative under the Sustainability and Resilience sub-committee that was mandated to develop concepts with respect to the rehabilitation of boreholes.
The First Acre project will be implemented between July 10th and August 15th 2023 and it will be conducted in two parts, to further bolster the Committee’s activities with respect to the repair and rehabilitation of boreholes:
- Civil works (of the boreholes)
- Capacity building for the members of the Borehole Water User Committees at the county level, with a focus on financial management skills, governance and borehole management, product innovation, quality management and market dynamics, as well as gender socio-economic empowerment.
